Although life can be full of bright and sunny days

Although life can be full of bright and sunny days, it is also true that the dark grey cold can linger for a bit too long. It can often feel like we are stuck in a rut, and the routine can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, even in the midst of the mundane, it is important to keep pushing forward and living life on our own terms.

In this latter-year video journal, I delve into my personal experience of a lukewarm year. I discuss the ups and downs, the moments of joy, and the moments of sorrow. How we overlook our small achievements and how it’s okay to take some time and reset. By sharing my story, I hope to be a source of inspiration for anyone who may be going through similar emotions.

As soon as he regained consciousness, he caught a long-forgotten whiff in the breeze. Pine and sunbaked stones. The salty yet airy scent. A smell he thought he had buried somewhere in the maze of memory. The human mind was the strangest place, both home, and exile. How could it hold on to something as elusive and intangible as a scent when it was capable of erasing concrete chunks of the past, block by block?

He looks around, his head still buzzing from what put him into a lucid sleep. Or was he always awake? His brain decides such questions will have to wait if he wants to keep his sanity. He spots a black rectangular box next to his hand. Curiosity nudges him to pick it up. He notices that the box has a cylindrical structure attached to one of its ends. Instinct guides him to raise the box and fit an opening upon his right eye.

That’s when the floodgates open. An onslaught of half-memories. A smile here. A tear there. A conversation plucked away mid-sentence. He couldn’t recall why he was here or how he came to be. But that doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is that all of it, even if he couldn’t remember, brought him here, to this place, to show you everything you’ll never see if not for him. He seemed almost imperceptibly to brighten for a moment. Not letting the moment take him away, his finger presses the shutter.

He has crossed the realms of reality. He is in a magical place. He is in San Junipero.

I don’t think anyone can write about photography as beautifully as Sontag does - her photographic agency - equally if not more impressive. I make a frame and while posting it when I sit to exercise my mediocre writing faculty the biggest mistake I make is to turn to the greats for prompts. There I find their eloquent written representations which I am not even capable of mimicking. At times, when I cannot string together something remotely useful, I tend to borrow their words. For it would be unjust to subject you to commonplace prose.

Coming back from the subtext. I was in Kerala and as I gazed upon the scene in front of me - a tangerine glow enveloping the horizon, while fishermen went about their usual day in a boat, I was reminded of the essence of the words of Sontag. The fishermen, going about their daily routine, may not have realized the beauty that surrounded them. The viewers on canoes and boats would not have realized it. Only one who exercises photographic seeing can see what actually lies ahead.

In the stillness of the moment, I was struck by the simplicity of the scene - the way the fishermen worked in tandem, their faces weathered by the sun and the sea, the rhythmic sound of the waves against the boat, and the tangerine glow that seemed to paint everything in its path. The bird was a paid actor. Ha ha. The point is that it was too beautiful for me to not capture and bring to life, for you, the viewer of my humble art.

And in the middle of the dusk, they creep away.
The unearthly hues,
of tawny, lilac, and grey.

The air condenses into a frail veil, accenting the evening glow.
Hovering in the sky or swimming in the bay?
Spell bounding, this cloud of grey.

Streaked across the horizon, sitting beneath.
Disguised as running water is the epitome of serenity,
To sway your heart away.

And it calls you, speaks to you.
In ways, it’s incredibly hard to explain.
Stay, why don’t you stay?

It unlocks the chamber of feelings; opens the floodgates of cheerful nostalgia.
A whole lot of experiences make their way.
Some black, some white, but most of them, grey.

It’s flowing ever so smoothly, the ebbs and flows of emotions taking you away.
And still, the scenery calls you.

It’s all a dance, isn’t it? This finite stretch of our time on a lonely planet we call life. It doesn’t matter if you like to stand still or move like there’s no tomorrow, it is a moving, breathing thing and your input to it is almost inconsequential. It will drift, it will drag, it will sprint, and everyone is free to either watch it from the sidelines or join the ride.

Don’t get it the wrong way. It sure provides us with encouraging prompts - something is going to tick each one of us - the rhythm - to each its own - as long as we allow ourselves to flow with it, we are the verb form of this noun. For someone like me who loves to set the rhythm almost every time and gets exhausted after leading the dance on a gapless mixtape, incapable of lifting a hair, the goosebump of the magnificence of nature does the trick.

The tranquil lake bathing in a warm glow as the sun begins to set, casting long shadows across the ripples. The sky, a canvas of purple and orange hues, the remnants of a day well-spent. When you look up at the sky, the purple hues reflect in your eyes. For a moment, you sit there, lost in thought, as if you are waiting for something or someone. And then it comes to you. The tick you have been waiting for. The music to shake your soul. The rhythm to lift you up. The beat that puts you back in the driving seat. This is what prompts me to move. What does it for you?

Ending the musing with a quote I feel is fitting to this context.

/and freeze One of the significant advantages of $/and freeze One of the significant advantages of modern image-capturing devices is the ability to convert fractions of a second into clear, neat, tact sharp slices of time. Obviously, the development of digital media has brought us to a state where we no longer worry about how many times the shutter rolls - we have infinite storage. All we have to do is just aim, focus, and shoot. The camera’s brain and electronic shutter will do the rest. Right? Well, my experience in the field has taught me that it’s - see, aim, frame, focus, and wait. Wait for the pieces to fall into place for the frame you saw assemble in front of you. It’s way more rewarding this way. This frame is an example of one such instance where I exercised this philosophy. We were in a canoe in the Alappuzha lake and the early birds were making hurried motions to catch the worm. Rumour has it, most of the birds got to know about this human saying and the worm-snatching market has been crazy ever since. But that’s another story altogether. Where was I? Yes. Birds. The frame that I saw was to make something using just the straight geometry. I saw the horizon, horizontal; the canoe, vertical (in the frame). And the office-going birds chancing dead center. So, I did what I just preached - I saw, aimed, framed, focussed, waited, and shot. And shot again. And again. 14 times. And then I ended up with this. As a species that has a pair of eyes as one of its pivotal sense organs, seeing is commonplace for us. And so are the POVs. We know inherently what a long-shot looks like, what a close-up looks like, and what an ultra-wide angle looks like. We are accustomed to seeing in a specific set of angles. To hold out an ever-so-dwindling attention span, we have to encounter something intentionally unusual.

But how do you get ‘intentionally unusual’ in the middle of India’s largest lake? Easy. You put on a life vest, lean from the side of your canoe, and pray that you don’t topple into the water with your non-waterproof camera. That’s the angle part. Now, how do you frame the scene? You tilt your device’s screen as much as you can and when the tilting stops, you tilt your neck to achieve a visible line of sight. Simple enough, right? Cool, then comes the part of focussing. You are hanging from a tiny canoe holding onto the edge with one hand and holding on with your dear life to the camera in the other. You either bank on the dexterity of your index finger to focus or you use two fingers of your other hand to trigger a remote shutter release.

After you have performed this very-easy-not-at-all-scary-procedure, you’ll have a frame like this with water and sky touching the opposite ends of the vertical frame with the subject and light following all the ‘make-your-image-pretty’ photography rules only for a dance monkey platform to ignore it. Such activities are for the soul, and one should relish that. Sharing a few odd-angle frames from the series over the next few posts.

Ever since I was a little kid, I have seen the world through a small rectangular box. In the 1990’s, it was the boxy glass of Yashica that was always glued to my right eye. In the 2000’s, it was a couple of smartphones and since mid 2010’s it’s been the sometimes-frustrating-other-times-not-so-much rubber groove of Nikon.

Through all these years I have trained my eyes to exercise photographic seeing. It’s been quite some time since my primary source of seeing has out qualified my secondary source of vision - an upgrade is long due. I won’t blabber about it and bore you. But the context is important for what I am about to share.

I am not by any means proficient in the grammar of seeing - I have no intention of sounding profound. But I believe that I have grasped enough basics to construct frames that speak to the viewers - that delivers a feeling. I attempt to turn experience itself into a way of seeing. And that, at times, makes the seeing transcend the visual norms.

The aptitude of discovery and hunting beauty, has me chasing abstract yet manifest-able frames. Because of their nature, they are often beyond the capturing capabilities of my current rectangular box. Still, I wish. Still, I try. Still, I capture. This frame is one such concept. A relatively faster moving Earthly object in front of a slower moving un-Earthly object (as observed from Earth) has been a recurring concept in my mental imagery. To capture at least a beaten down version of it fills me with hope and fuels my wish. One day, Inshallah.

Captured this with the maximum optical zoom my 8 year old discontinued camera with its kit glass could capture. Focus on the subject, for now. I’ll improve the pixel count in the years to come.

/clarity

Don’t you feel more times than often that our lives are so gauzed behind layers of syntax and semantics, behind days and hours, veiled in agencies and institutions, names forgotten, salvaged and shed, that simply knowing the wound exists, does nothing to reveal it.

The deep purple moments, days, weeks, months, years - visible only through your and only your set of god’s loneliest creation - the ones, alone in their sockets, don’t even know that another one just like them exists just a few centimeters away. If the metaphor was too obscure, pardon me, it’s a gauzy phase for me. It refers to the human eye - through which so much of the world passes and yet it retains nothing.

It’s in those hazy, confused phases that we need our agency of clarity. It can be art or music or walking or meditation or writing or gaming - anything that defogs the metaphorical windshield of your brain. For me, personally, it’s the process of creation. If I have my camera with me - it’s making frames - doesn’t matter the subject or the setting. It’s the act of looking through that rectangular box and finding new definitions that do the trick for me. If I don’t have my unofficial eyes, it’s writing. It’s not important what I write, but what that process does for me. I chase and hunt down meaning with my limited vocabulary while trying to string together something remotely meaningful. Am I doing that now? I guess we’ll never know. Perhaps I try to find in these words the peace and safety that life has not granted me. Maybe we all do the same thing with our own mediums.

This frame is a visual representation of this process of achieving clarity for me. I’ll not over-explain and indulge in the blasphemy of explaining art. This is my humble interpretation. What’s your agency of clarity?

P.S.- Look closely at the sunlight piercing the sky. Do you spot a face as well? Or am I the only weirdo?

/of calm and chaos

Have you ever stood in front of the amber-orange setting sun and simply stared? Stared at the landscape, at the surroundings, at the sand on the beach losing its color with every passing minute, at the waves colliding with the rocks and splitting into infinite particles like sands of time only to become whole again, into the fading light, into the abyss?

Most of us have, and if you’re someone who hasn’t, try it. It’s… well, to label it would mean restricting its potential to a mere definition so I’d rather say, it’s something - what exactly, that you decide. Sunsets have this effect on me - rendering my vocabulary and thoughts as gauzy and soft as the light itself.

Back again. There’s something about the combination of the setting sun and the crashing waves that I can’t quite put into words. How in a few crushed minutes, it changes how things are seen, including ourselves. The world, in its entirety, reddens. In every direction you look, it all appears to be the same. Yet, we know how different it really is. Just like our everyday lives with the only difference of us not realizing it on a day-to-day basis.

There’s a sense of calm in this chaos. Why chaos? Red color, stuff hitting rocks, breaking into pieces, loud crashing noises - you get the idea. Sunset, like survival, exists only on the verge of its own disappearing. And scenes like the one in this frame usually act as a veiled reference to this realization for me. How does it make you feel?

/I no longer see the coast that I always used to see

During a wee-hour conversation with @devashish.joshi, he introduced me to the genius of @mattmaeson and I haven’t stopped thinking about some of the lyrical poetry this fine man has in his songs. Art inspires art, and I thought I’ll share it with you - maybe it’d speak to you as well.

In his song "I Just Don't Care That Much," he tells a story of personal reflection and needing time to find himself - a feeling that I am sure a lot of us have had more times than we’d like to admit. The times we’ve acted on it are a different story altogether.

This piece of music transported me to all the dystopian sunsets on the coasts that I have ever seen - all at once. Like those AI-generated videos that you see nowadays - imagery moving through time, blurring the objects yet staying on the central theme. But there’s a place that stayed the longest. You guessed it right. This one.

I remember the chariot of thoughts running inside my head, the representative horses fighting for the metaphorical real estate on the right side of my brain (coz the other half was busy framing the scene). The horses were on the same team (read: theme) though - noticing time running through my fingers, not recognizing the allegedly unknown elements surrounding my life, and having the urge to find myself - again, which spoiler alert, as always, happened.

But this musing isn’t about that. It’s about that moment in time - when you are standing in front of the setting sun and you are one with yourself. The tumult of thoughts in your head - the sensations, the vibrations, the confusion, the chaos, and finally, freedom. I’d like to close this piece with an excerpt from the song that started this train of thought and represents this situation with words than I ever can:

”Combustible, confused, and free
I no longer see that coast
That I always used to see
And I think it drifted far from me
Why am I talking to a ghost
That I've never even seen”

/this is not the end, or is it?

Time weighs down on you like an old, ambiguous dream. You keep on moving, trying to slip through it. As you move, you are always losing something precious - lost opportunities, lost possibilities, feelings you can never get back again.

From the earliest age, we exhibit goodbyes - goodbyes to friends and family. We see our parents and siblings off at the station; we visit cousins, attend schools and colleges; we marry, or travel abroad. It is part of the human experience that we are constantly gripping a good fellow by the shoulders and wishing them well, taking comfort from the notion that we will hear a word of them soon enough.

But sometimes, we don’t and maybe won’t, not sooner, not later, not ever. It can be for any reason; commas in our lives - forced to become periods. Our connection is like this glowing streak of sun. We see the reflection reaching out to us and us to it. Yet, there’s always a distance in between. Does the journey stop there or does it continue, we cannot know for sure. A comma, forced to be a period.

Still, no matter how much time passes, no matter what takes place in the interim, there are some things we can never assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away. They remain with us forever, like a touchstone. And that’s the part that is meant to be alive. I guess this is not the end and as long as we have our conscious brains, it never will be.

/equilibrium

An object, in physics and colloquially termed as a material thing that can be seen and touched. An object is also a philosophical term often used in contrast to the term - subject. A subject is an observer and an object is a thing observed. Object relations theory is a school of thought in psychoanalytic theory centered around theories of stages of ego development. Its concerns include the relation of the psyche to others in childhood and the exploration of relationships between external people, as well as internal images and the relations found in them.

Force is the push or the pull on an **object** that causes it to change its velocity. We know that left unchecked, disorder increases over time. Energy disperses, and systems dissolve into chaos. Hence, I believe it is safe to say that the forces are always trying to do something to the object, and it is generally towards chaos. Whether it is your psyche or the physical world around you, it’s all playing the same tune - chaos and entropy.

But the moment you decide to check, to take charge, to find order in the infinite disorder, things change. Not to say that it’s immediately rainbows and butterflies. It has been climbing new heights of disorder for so long, it’s going to take a while. But even then, you realize that it’s insanely difficult to achieve a state in which opposing forces are balanced. The force is too strong on both sides to sway this metaphorical pendulum one way or the other.

It’s in these rare split-second moments (not to scale) of equilibrium that you are whole. That can mean a thousand different things. In the context of things, for me, it was making this frame.

/on walking the tightrope of rules

What makes a perfect shot, in your honest opinion?

Is it a shot that follows all the photographic rules?

Is it the one that follows specific rules, like the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, or the rule of diagonals?

Is it a frame that incorporates postmodern concepts like minimalism?

Or is it a piece that simply makes you feel something?

We are all old enough to know that there isn’t one option that could answer the posed question but if you think hard enough, you’ll notice your brain gravitating toward one of these. That is your true feeling. That is your answer.

A euphemism for the subdued agitation that this question might evoke is that don’t these options exhibit causality. Simply put, if you exercise your photographic agency within the realms that guide the art, you are bound to produce something that makes you feel something. To that, I’d say, not necessarily. Just scroll through your social media feed and you’ll see it for yourself. There would be hardly any shot that doesn’t follow one or the other rule of photography, and yet, most of them will fail to leave a lasting ‘image’ on your psyche. (See what I did there, wordplay, lol :P)

The point is, photographic seeing is an art that cannot be restricted by the guide rails of the regulations. Sure, they help you to get started, and they give you a baseline, but to create something truly wonderful, you need to be an obsessed observer. One cannot be a good conveyer if one isn’t good at seeing.

P.S.- This frame follows the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, the rule of diagonals, the rule of fore, mid, and background, and minimalism to name a few. I guess this prose was meta all along.

/it’s an event

Photography, in my opinion, is an event. While the others are passive, clearly alarmed spectators, having a camera transforms a person into something active, a voyeur: only s/he has mastered the situation. What do these people see? We don’t know. And it doesn’t matter. It is an Event: something worth seeing - and therefore worth photographing.

Be it a momentous celebration with hundreds of faces sporting their own micro-expressions or a cold, dark evening on a lake with water cradling your boat - it is always an event. And after the event has ended, the picture will still exist, conferring on the event a kind of immortality (and importance) it would never otherwise have enjoyed.

It has the ability to produce something that could take you on a merry-go-round of emotions, unlocking new visions and introducing you to newer objects with each passing minute. While real people are out there dancing their hearts out or singing their favorite tunes or catching fish to feed their families or pumping oil from the depths of the ocean, the photographer stays behind his or her camera, creating a tiny element of another world: the image-world that bids to outlast us all.

The joyride of feelings that the photographer goes through isn’t easy to express - it’s something that has to be felt. Like I did while making this frame, hanging from my boat, holding on to my non-splash-proof camera with my dear life, trying to simulate the rule of thirds with a tilted screen, the blood jaywalking the veins of my brain it had no business getting into, getting dizzy with every passing second and zero visibility. It is an event, wouldn’t you say?

Out beyond the mountainous city blocks and the green cavernous forests, there is a place.
I’ll meet you there.

Where the Elysium-green fields are a potion for the soul,
watching the ebb and flow of water and there’s an abundance of petrichor.

Where the nights grow darker, still there’s a rumor of light.
A constant rustling of grass, a birdsong, a gentle wind - oh, what a delight.

Where the gray of the soul and the gray of the sky could not be told apart.
Where we cannot tell the difference between reality and the workings of the heart.

Where everything is a metaphor, where time holds its breath.
I’ll meet you, I’ll meet you there.

There’s something about this scene that spoke to me and simultaneously emptied my vocabulary. I was chasing words and not finding any. So, what you just read is my mediocre attempt at stringing together a few lines in an attempt to give my feelings a verbal form.

I think it’s fair to say that water is the most precious element of Earth after (breathable) air, of course. It shares an important piece in our inception and our demise, in some shape or form. I think it’s the one that’s the most neglected and probably one of the most beautiful elements.

Don’t believe me? Give it a minute of undivided attention when you encounter it the next time - be it in a man-made setting or in its natural habitat. For the time being, slide this carousel and observe. Gaze at threads of the fabric it weaves, the loom of liquid silver, the pink sleek robe that it adorns, the airy sparkling of its flow.

See how it flashes like fairy dust, how it shimmers like sprinkled stardust, how it glimmers with silver like billions of scattered sequins glistening together? If nothing, water is way more versatile than its Earthly element counterparts. It can be transparent like air, it can have glassy clarity, and it can also be opaque like the Earth itself.

I hope this representation makes you pay closer attention to this exquisite element of Earth.
