Take it from someone who subscribes to the notion of planning to the ‘T’ when it comes to realizing photo concepts that lie outside the immediate control of the human life form, that there is such a thing as unexpected luck or its ubiquitous representation, serendipity.
While tracking, mapping, charting, and planning have resulted in some photographs that stand tall on the impostor syndrome edifice—me pinching myself, did I really create this, the lucky encounters have had their fair share of contributions. And I know there’s a whole argument around the more you practice, the luckier you become, and that’s true but that’s not the muse of this musing. It’s acknowledging and appreciating the alignment of alien (to your plan) elements to elevate your endorphins—for it to make you witness hitherto unexperienced horizons of beauty.
I was wrapping up the planned shoot, satisfied with having made the long exposures of the traditional windmills of Zaanse Schans when I lifted my head to see the canvas of sky colored in hues of pretty pink and lilac purple and had a chance encounter with this personified quote from Pinterest, “life’s best moments usually happen unplanned.” And all I could say while firing the shutter of the camera was “Indeed. Indeed.”
