/did a thing. kinda happy. kinda sad.

People might want to do things. Just to do things, because they feel it is part of their identity. Doing absurd things with any device that can digitally trap life is that thing for me—always trying to steal something from death’s suitcase. I just did it because I wanted to do it. Never was good at it. Nor am I today. But if nothing, I have been consistent. I practice the craft like a religion. And I continue having faith that someday I will be able to create something that’ll at the very least deliver a feeling to the audience - the viewer, the observer, the reader.

The belief that consistency trumps talent is what has kept me going. I’m not going to glorify the wheel-unfortunate of hardships and circumstances. But there’s always a brain cell that escapes your watchful sanity neurons and flashes the word impostor like the bat signal on the darkest of nights. And at times it takes all you’ve got to shut it down. You say to yourself, “All I can do is be me, whoever that is” and carry on.

I remember that night in December, when I started a project that I just wanted to make, doesn’t matter if anyone would be interested in watching it, or if I never could tell anyone about it, I simply wanted to make it. I completed it over 5 sleepless nights and titled it “Coda”. It ended up being my second project to win an international film festival. Oh, what a little bit of faith could do. Happy because of that.

Sad, well not sad, disappointed. They say, the less you want something, the less you think about it, the less you obsess over it, the more you’re going to do it in a natural way. The more you’re going to do it for yourself. You’re going to do it in a way you’re good at, and you’re going to stick with it. The quality of your work will be higher. But I have nothing for this year. Photographs, yes, but the expression via moving pixels has had a drought. I am still going to try to conjure something but holding the trophy in my hands, I couldn’t help feeling this bittersweet cocktail of emotions. I guess I’m wired that way.

//the air has become thin and the cold inside it has surfaced. The sky and I are in a conversation. The distant sound of prayer bells is echoing across town. And I say to it, “Diwali, the Festival of Lights, has always been a distant dream for me. Growing up, cultural and social constructs kept me at arm's length from this vibrant celebration of light and all its metaphors. And as I entered adulthood, the relentless demands of life seemed to overshadow the joyous spirit of festivity. But in this distance, I found a unique perspective—one of a silent observer, a voyeur capturing the essence of Diwali from the shadows.

The frames I make are a testament to this distance, a reflection of my journey as an outsider looking in. Standing on the 7th floor, looking at all these images captured over the years, these are a fragment of a memory, a glimpse into the cacophonous silence that envelops Diwali. It's a paradoxical celebration, where the deafening sound of crackers coexists with the profound quiet of inner contemplation.

In the soft glow of distant diyas and the echo of laughter from far-off celebrations, I discovered a world of beauty that thrives on the margins of my experience. In the quietude of my distant celebrations, each year, I create my own myth—a myth that narrates a tale of resilience, connection, and the enduring human spirit. In the flicker of each distant diya, I discern a message—a message that even from afar, we can embrace the brilliance of light, seek meaning in the silence, and conquer the shadows that linger within us. Photography + Diwali + October has always been some combination.

And so, as Diwali's lights paint the night sky with their vibrant hues, I am reminded of the faith that kindles the fires of hope and inspiration. I hold onto the dream that perhaps, someday, I will step from the shadows and into the heart of Diwali's radiance. Maybe, one day, this outsider will become an insider, celebrating this festival not from a distance, but from within.

/beautiful wreck

In the quiet embrace of the golden hour, the sun bathed the world in a soft, warm yellow glow. Before me lay the wreckage of a boat, its verdant hull resting solemnly upon the shoreline. It was a sight of profound beauty—a beautiful wreck that whispered secrets of existence.

The boat, once a vessel of purpose and journey, now lay in disarray, its green paint weathered and peeling. Yet, there was a haunting elegance to its ruin, a quiet dignity in its surrender to nature. It had embraced the cycle of birth and decay, becoming a part of the eternal tapestry of existence.

In the soft, golden light, the wreckage seemed to come alive with vitality. Shadows and light danced upon its surface, creating a mesmerizing interplay of textures and hues. Even in decay, there was a beauty that transcended conventional notions of perfection.

The green of the boat, now muted and worn, spoke of resilience. It bore scars, a reminder of the impermanence of all things. It mirrored the human experience—navigating life's storms and facing moments of decay. Yet, in its own wreckage, there was an opportunity for transformation and renewal.

Zafron wrote, "To truly understand something, see it from every angle." Walking around the boat, each perspective revealed a new facet of its beauty—the sunlight on its splintered wood, intricate patterns of rust, and tendrils of ivy reclaiming it.

In the juxtaposition of ruin against the golden hour, I found a metaphor for life. Beauty lies in embracing change, finding meaning in decay, and discovering elegance in our own wreckage. Like the boat, we are all beautiful wrecks, each with a unique story, a part of life's ever-unfolding narrative.

The woods have secrets, hidden deep within the heart of ancient trees, and as the soft golden light filters through their leaves, it unveils a tale that transcends time. You stand beneath this cathedral of nature, the rays of the setting sun breaking through the foliage like spears of enlightenment observing a dance between light and shadow, hope and despair.

The very act of light penetrating the veil of leaves is a testament to the relentless pursuit of illumination in a world that often seems shrouded in darkness. As Sylvia Plath so eloquently wrote, "I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart. I am. I am. I am." Each ray of light that bathes you in its gentle warmth is a reminder that I, too, am here, existing in this moment, bearing witness to nature's timeless spectacle.

But you also recognize that existence is not always a tranquil reverie. It is often a tumultuous journey, filled with shadows and spikes, much like the rays that pierce the forest's canopy. Yet, even in the presence of these sharp, unforgiving truths, there is beauty — a beauty that illuminates the path forward, casting aside the darkness. It's a reminder that life's most profound moments often occur when we find solace in the interplay of light and shadow, embracing the existential duality that defines our existence.

Just like you, as I stand beneath the golden twilight, I am both humbled and uplifted by the beauty of this fleeting moment. It is a reminder that existence, with all its complexities and contradictions, is a gift — a gift that we must cherish, soak in, and bask beneath as we journey through the ever-shifting landscape of our lives.

/katarniya and the sun

Sunsets, am I right? How many times have you spotted one lurking around? Right across the road as you walk bathing you in the evening glow, going behind the house in front of yours as if playing a very long game of hide and seek, in the rearview mirror making you feel your emotions closer as they are usually further away.

It makes the normal everyday world around you, dystopian. It unlocks something inside you. It speaks to the parts of your brain you don’t usually tap into. It triggers something unknown. It is a unique moment no matter how many times it has passed. And sometimes at special moments like that, you feel a pain alongside your happiness. It makes you watch everything so carefully even for ever-so-slight a moment.

I suppose I don’t really know what I’m talking about. And I suppose that I’m not supposed to. Glory, superstitious dominance, elegant grace, dystopian charm, polarizing fervor — no matter how you try to define the characteristics of the orange orb — I suppose it’d always be something deeper. So, let it mean whatever it means for you, and soak in the beauty of the setting sun.

/whispers of the moon

In the soft glow of twilight, where the pastel-colored sky kisses the horizon and the leaves take on the hues of a vintage film, I find myself pondering the age-old connection between the human psyche & the enigmatic moon. It is a relationship that has fascinated poets, mystics, and dreamers for centuries, one that transcends time and space, & one that seems to find its most profound expression in the delicate interplay of light and shadow beneath the silent gaze of our celestial companion.

The moon, with its ever-changing phases, mirrors the shifting tides of our own emotions. It waxes and wanes, just as we do in our daily lives. In its fullness, it casts a radiant glow upon the world, illuminating even the darkest corners of our consciousness. Yet, in its crescent form, it reminds us of the inherent duality of existence, where light and darkness coexist in delicate equilibrium.

In the soft green leaves that frame the moon, I find a reflection of our own vitality and growth. The leaves, like our thoughts, reach out toward the moon, seeking connection with the cosmic mysteries that lie beyond our grasp. Like the leaves, we too are part of a grand cosmic dance.

But what is it about the moon that captivates our imagination and stirs the depths of our souls? Is it the way its ethereal light bathes the world in a dreamlike glow, as if inviting us to step into a realm of enchantment? Or is it the sense of wonder and mystery it evokes, as we contemplate the vastness of the universe and our place within it?

Carlos Luis Zafron once wrote, "The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It's always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light & dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it's a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong & full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections."

It’s true. It’s profound. The moon, in its silent luminosity, reflects our own journey through life. It is a symbol of our ever-changing nature, our capacity for growth & transformation, and our unending quest for meaning in the vast expanse of the cosmos.

These whimsical wooden structures, nestled high amidst the branches, have a unique ability to transport us back to childhood fantasies while connecting us deeply with nature. They are more than mere dwellings; they are living works of art, embodying a harmonious coexistence between human design and the natural world.

The allure of a tree house begins with the ascent—a rickety ladder or a winding staircase that seems to stretch endlessly towards the sky. This journey skyward serves as a tangible reminder of the spirit of adventure and curiosity that resides within us all. Once within the embrace of the trees, the world below recedes, and a sense of tranquility prevails. The filtered sunlight, the gentle rustling of leaves, and the creaking of timeworn wood create a symphony that lulls both body and soul. It's a cozy retreat, a space where daydreams find their sanctuary.

As the sun sets, tree houses become beacons in the night, places where stories are shared, laughter echoes, and friendships are forged under the canopy of stars. In the world of tree houses, nature's embrace and human ingenuity entwine to create a sanctuary for the young at heart—a world where dreams ascend alongside wooden staircases, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Made these during the golden hour as the warm glow of the setting sun caressed the glass windows.

/dawn is coming open your eyes

In the deep darkness of a moonless night, your thoughts, the ones you had locked in the equally dark corner of your mind come leaking out. As if the neverending nocturne has given them permission to break free.

Your physical self jolts into activity and your limbs search for water near you. You lift the rectangular device everyone seems to be a slave of nowadays. The LEDs light up together to form the number 4 followed by a colon and two zeroes. You have forced the thoughts back to purgatory and you are left empty with nothing but dreams — dreams you can design, dreams you can drive, dreams worthy of destiny.

You step outside and look towards the natural lightbox - the sky. You spot Helios starting his journey. The northern winds seem to be carrying a hum. You sit on the grass, listening to it as golden beams slant in through the trees and fall on your sleepy, bed-haired face.

Schopenhauer said mankind was apparently doomed to vacillate eternally between the two extremes of distress [and/or eustress] and boredom. Whenever you are at one end, time weighs down on you like an old, ambiguous dream. You keep on moving, trying to slip through it. But even if you go to the ends of the earth, you won't be able to escape it. Still, you have to go there— to the edge of the world. There's something you can't do unless you get there.

In this pursuit, there is an off chance of exploring the recesses of the soul, of letting yourself be carried away by imagination, beauty, and the mystery of fiction and art, of discovering a place between reality and surrealism, of finding a mode of expression that transcends language - written or spoken. And maybe you’ll create something gorgeous in its own way.

These frames titled ‘transcendence’ are a child of my imaginative thinking while on a cosmic journey on one of the extremes. Which one, I’ll let you decide. If you can, watch these while listening to Cosmic (around 05:00) by Avenged Sevenfold.

/some griefs can never be put right

It hasn’t been his day. It hasn’t been his week. It hasn’t been his month. Barring a couple of chance encounters with zufriedenheit, it hasn’t been his year. It was a peak summer day and like all relentless summer days, it was engulfed in a miasma of unpleasantries — temperature, temperament, you name it.

He was watching life pass by, literally and metaphorically. An ache was on the top of his stomach, an apprehension that was like a sick thought. It was a Weltschmerz — which the Germans used to call “Welshrats” — the world sadness that rises into the soul like a gas and spreads despair so that you probe for the offending event and can find none.

Beep-bop rings the notification. He double-taps the notification, enters his passcode, and contrary to his physical environment, he feels the water brimming and sloshing in him like a drink in a glass that is unsteady and too full.

He always believed that some griefs can never be put right and it was growing like a wildfire inside him, consuming him. But this minor blip on the screen made him see that although there’s not an abundance of them, there are a few things he has gotten right. And he’d rather continue sticking to them. For that gives him purpose and meaning.

His situation mirrored a photograph he made on a day right after the summers were over. He thought he’d share it with what he is typing right now. Maybe his summer was also getting over. Maybe his autumn is arriving.

/black is the color of my true love

Noir is often confused with black and white. There are a lot of subtle differences between both shooting styles but the one that I find the most easy to understand is that noir sports a low-key black-and-white theme. Although ‘Noir’ is a French word meaning black.

I don’t know if monochrome-neo-noir can be considered a style on its own but that’s how I see the world through my rectangular box. Making these images is an experience. These feel to me to be more tactful, more decorous than color, or simple black-and-white — or less voyeuristic and less sentimental or crudely lifelike.

I have kept these images hidden beneath the cover of their more vibrant, colorful counterparts. It seemed like the preference of the masses, the demand of popular taste. But with this particular image, shot in this mode, I felt compelled to let it stand alone.

It possesses an element of gravity, an intangible weight that is as invisibly visible as the breath we draw. In its monochromatic allure, it tells a story that transcends color. It's a tale of shadows and light, of secrets lurking in plain sight, and of emotions that resonate with the soul.

/hazy shades of summer The thing that I love the

/hazy shades of summer

The thing that I love the most about the setting sun is the silky softness of its luminous rays. It always steals the words from me and renders all my thoughts as gauzy and soft as the light itself. From the sunset, I learned a syntax for émerveillement, how to create something unexpected from the usual that fills the viewer with wonder.

The evening drives exploring the unchartered roads in the Katarniya Ghat region gave us an audience with moments with the potential to create magic. And when have I not capitalized on an opportunity wrapped in golden light? Here are artistic renditions as captured from our car (’cause who’d risk stepping out of the vehicle and get crushed by a herd of elephants 😅)
